Wayne-Westland Third-Grade Math Scores Continue to Trail State Averages, Makes Small Gains in 2023-24

The latest MSTEP Math results for Wayne-Westland third-graders show a small step in the right direction, but there’s still a long road ahead when it comes to improving math scores across the district.

In the 2023-24 school year, 21.1% of third-grade students in the district scored proficient in math, this is up slightly from 20.8% the year before. That number is still well below the statewide average of 43.4%, and far behind where the district was back in 2014-15, when 35.1% of students met proficiency.

Looking at individual schools, Walker-Winter once again had the strongest results in the district with 29.7% of students reaching proficiency. P.D. Graham followed closely at 28.1%. Roosevelt/McGrath also showed one of the biggest improvements, jumping to 26.8% after several years of scores under 20%.

Overall, the district is showing some signs of progress, but the data makes it clear that more work is needed to help all students reach their potential. School leaders, teachers, and families will need to keep working together to build on this momentum and close the gap.
