The Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) is administered online to students in grades 3-7 to assess their knowledge of state English language arts and mathematics standards.
In recent years, third-grade students in Wayne-Westland Community Schools District have experienced a decline in math scores. According to MISchoolData.com, it has been four years since any elementary school in the district has exceeded the state average.
The Wayne-Westland Community Schools District has consistently performed below the state average for nine consecutive years, with last year’s scores being 22% lower than the state average. In the 2023-2024 school year, the state average for M-STEP math tests was 43%. At Wayne-Westland’s highest-scoring elementary school, Walker-Winter, only 30% of students passed the test, while Albert Schweitzer, the lowest-scoring elementary school in the district, had a passing rate of just 14% among its third-graders.
