Third-grade students in the Wayne-Westland Community Schools have consistently struggled with math performance in recent years. The most recent M-STEP math scores revealed that none of the district’s elementary schools met or exceeded the statewide average for third-grade math proficiency in the 2022-2023 school year. In fact, only 14% of elementary students across the district scored proficient or higher in math, compared to 43.4% of third-grade students statewide.
The gap highlights a significant decline when compared to earlier years, and district officials are concerned about the long-term effects on students’ academic progress. As a result, Wayne-Westland schools have begun rolling out targeted academic supports, including after-school tutoring programs and additional math resources for teachers.
The M-STEP is a statewide standardized test administered to public school students across Michigan in selected grade levels and subject areas. The third-grade math M-STEP is one of these assessments and is considered an important indicator of early math skills and future academic success.
