Unraveling Sammy Davis Jr.’s Identity: Reflections on Self-Acceptance in a Modern World

I listened to Revisionist History hosted by Malcolm Gladwell. I specifically listened to the seventh episode of season 3 titled The Hug Heard Round the world. It is about world famous entertainer Sammy Davis Junior. He was known for his singing, dancing, acting, and impressionist skills with a career spanning from the 1930s to the 1990s. Davis was black however he thought that in order to achieve and to get ahead in the world was to act as if he wasn’t. Malcolm proposes a question to listeners asking, Was there a period where you felt you had something to prove? Was our judgment of him overly severe? I thought it was interesting because he talks about the nuances of self identity while also examining the time period at that time which made me compare my perception of self identity and self acceptance in today’s generation.
