Timeline Tour of What I Learned in Journalism 331-001

I enrolled in the course Comp 331: Multimedia Journalism to understand different approaches to finding research, and data. Learning how to report on this information honestly and being able to verify my sources.

Because I took this course, I learned many things that will accommodate my learning in psychology. I can now do blog posts and embed links from social media platforms, and podcasts to name a few. I can do contextual links and verify my data using the tools given in the class and use curation Datawrapper sites to give a better visualization of my data.

We focused on data the most, like in assignments about school districts where I focused on Farmington Public School Districts. I gathered data for teachers’ retentions, teacher/student ratios, and the M-Step scores and I was able to talk to a lot of people from the district including the communication director Diane Bauman. I was able to ask as many questions as I needed to understand her role in the school, their future goals for enrollment, the elimination of Pay to Participate, and what she struggles with most working in her field.

I also got the opportunity to speak with a journalist who was our guest speaker, Jessica Strachan. She has some amazing pieces she has written and assisted on. I enjoyed learning from her and learning the way she climbed up to a big journalist, I especially enjoyed the article she spoke of writing about the white woman who lynched who was one of Martin Luther King’s supporters.

This course was a lot of information, many websites, research, data gathering, embedding, and discussions with our classmates. Through this course, I gained an overall understanding of the proper way to collect, report, and truthfully dispense information.

Hello, I am a jr at the University of Michigan in Dearborn. I transferred from U-M Ann Arbor because U-M Dearborn was more commuter and family/work-friendly. My major is in Psychology, focusing on child psychology. I hope to own a school and incorporate psychology into learning and positive lifestyles.
