My daughter, Stacy, walked much further than I did exploring the Matanuska Glacier, which is northeast of Anchorage. This glacier is actually accessed by going through private land, so the very smart landowner charges $40 or so for every person who wants to come through and walk out on a glacier. And heck, who wouldn’t? You are in Alaska, after all! (Photo: Nancy Hanus) The 49th State Brewing Company has two breweries, one in Anchorage and one several hours away, north of Denali. This Yak burger, which was pretty delicious, was served in Anchorage. The key was squashing before eating. Very efficient way to get your morning brew, without getting out of the car, especially in a place that is cold most of the year. In addition to being known as the Halibut Fishing Capital of the World and having a great milelong jut into the Bay of Alaska called “The Spit,” it has a great little brewery called the Homer Brewing Co.
