This semester, I decided to take COMP-331, Multimedia Journalism. Over the course of the semester, I realized that not only is this class about writing journalistic blogs, but also learning what really goes into them. Through student-led discussions, I discussed an array of topics with my peers on articles that interested them, and listened to several guest speakers from reporting companies and school districts on how to gather and report unbiased data and stories.
On the more nitty-gritty end of things, I learned the many aspects of bringing data into an article. It started off simple: adding contextual links into blogs to add a layer of depth. Yet over the course of the semester, it went deeper. We delved into sites like mischooldata and used their tools to find out all sorts of data about our local schools, as well as put it into charts and graphs. We learned how to embed links into our posts, adding data, social media posts, and even podcasts. I learned that besides writing an engaging article, there is so much more that goes into journalism, including finding the right data and reporting it in an unbiased and engaging way.
