For the most part, when people think of Journalism the first thing that comes to mind is the newspaper or traditional news television. However through this class and these assignments over the year, I was able to see journalism in its latest and probably most accessible form. For starters, data is not just something used by scientists but by journalists as well. Whether it is a blog or an article, compiled data is the most substantial way to convey information concisely and sensibly. Just like mathematicians Just like mathematicians, journalists have to assemble their findings in chart or bar format. Something that I was not privy to before this class. The most important thing, however, is the truth and accuracy that must be met on all levels of a writer’s work. For multiple assignments, we were asked to evaluate bias and how to discern between the good and the bad. A lesson that can be incorporated in all walks of life, especially these days.
An important part of learning Journalistic writing in various forms is how exactly one should be structured. That’s where the discussions came in, each week there were sets of discussions that contained articles and with that came the opportunity to learn how professionals worked on the internet. Being able to be refreshed so consistently on how an article in any media should look helped me when attempting to do my own blogs. The level of bias and professionalism needed in each article I hope was there as a result of it. Finally, when it came down to writing my blog about a school, I felt as if I was actively participating in multimedia journalism. All in all, I think that not just the assignments listed above but all of the work assigned led me to a greater/better understanding of how real journalism looks in a multimedia format.
