Disparities in Student Preformance Across Farmington Elementary Schools

FARMINGTON, Mich. – As school of choice grow in popularity across the state of Michigan, the public education landscape is growing and evolving. New data from MiSchoolData suggests disparities in student performance across elementary schools within the Farmington Public School District, raising questions and concerns about equity and access within the district.

Within the 2023/24 school year, Farmington Public Schools had a total of 9,188 students across its campuses. Among its elementary schools, Hillside and J.A. Lanigan, there were a total of 636 and 487 students, respectively, as data pulled from the Michigan Department of Education.

However, looking at academic outcomes, some schools consitently over preform compared to others. In the 2014-15 school year, Forest Elementary had 75% of its third graders meet or exceed MSTEP math testing expectations.

According to a 2023 report from NCES, Hillside saw consistent improvement, while Lanigan saw vast fluctuation. Such variation can influence parent’ choices of where they wish to send their children, and possibly force them to opt for a different school within or outside of the district.

As the Michigan Department of Education continues to strive for more data transperncy, families in FPS as well as those across the state are more empowere with the tools than evr to evaluate educational options and choose what is best fit for their needs.

I used virtualscienceteachers.org because when I went to use the data wrapper, the website would not load, and I kept getting an error code. I tried it on Chrome, Safari, my iPad, and my iPhone. I was not sure what to do – I am so sorry.
