While statewide public school enrollment numbers continue to decline, Bloomfield Hills Schools’ student losses have been less than half those experienced statewide since the 2018-2019 school year.
Bloomfield’s official student count for the 2022-2023 school year was 5,166 students, down 6.2% from 5,506 students in 2018-2019. In comparison, there has been a 4.7% statewide decline in the past five years, and a 16% decline since 2003, according to a report published this month in Chalkbeat.
Bloomfield Hills student enrollment declines have been steady when looking at the past 12 years, but those declines raising 1% from 2018-19 to 2022-23. There was an overall 7% drop in student count from 2010-2011 to 2022-2023, when there were 5,586 students in the district. The highest decline in a single year that has been at Bloomfield Hills schools, which experienced a 3% drop in student enrollment from 2019-20 to 2020-21.
In comparison, the lower and upper elementary schools and the middle school have all had steady enrollment since 2010-2011.
