Timeline of what I did in Multimedia Journalism

Multimedia Journalism has been one of the most interesting and rewarding courses I’ve taken in college. I’m a political science major, so I get to handle theories and systems a lot, but this course was different—a lighthearted, experiential gateway to storytelling that literally brought the subject to life. It also made me gain a better appreciation for the journalistic work of framing public understanding and holding institutions accountable.

A real highlight of the class was doing reporting on the Wayne-Westland Community Schools. Diving into data, investigating, and turning it all into a solid and compelling narrative showed me just how powerful journalism can be when rooted in facts. I also enjoyed dipping into the world of podcasts—it was engaging to discover audio storytelling as a viable journalistic tool.

The online discussion forums presented another layer of learning by allowing us to articulate our own opinions and learn through others’ perspectives. And creating data visualizations was a tricky exercise that pushed me to think about how information could be conveyed in effective and creative manners.
