Wayne-Westland Community School District third-graders have had declining M-Step math scores over the past nine years. Half of Wayne-Westland elementary schools scored at or above the district-wide results in 2023-2024 but no school scored above the state average. However, third-grade students have been performing better since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared.
On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic threat after 118,000 people across globe died as a result of lethal infections. In the same year, Wayne-Westland third-graders scored an average of 15.2% on their M-Step math test, making it the worst score the since the 2014-2015 school year when reporting of scores began.
As of last year, Wayne-Westland third-graders raised their average score by 38.82% since the 2020-2021 school year. This lands them at an average score of 21.1% in 2023-2024, still under a statewide average score of 43.4% but a significant improvement nonetheless.
“The Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress, or M-STEP, is a 21st Century computer-based assessment designed to gauge how well students are mastering state standards,” according to michigan.gov.
